Hege Dalen and Toril Hansen, a lesbian couple, were having dinner at a campsite opposite Utöyan Island last July in Norway when they heard screaming and gunshots coming from the island. The couple hopped in their boat and drove across the water, rescuing an estimated 40 people as bullets hit the side of their boat. Then, there was the young Hispanic intern, Daniel Hernandez Jr., who was the first in a string of people credited with saving Representative Gabrielle Giffords’ life last January. This week in the tragic mall shooting in Oregon, Allan Fonseca, a young man working at Macy’s helped shoppers escape to safety. Heroism doesn’t care sexual orientation and neither do the people alive today due to the bravery of these men and woman. While there might not be a Santa Claus, there might be a hero behind the Lancome counter.
